Brassica species are a popular option for cover crops. They are known for improving soil health, increasing water holding capacity and relieving compaction. Brassica species are also popular for livestock producers to use for fall or winter grazing.

Winter camelina is the only brassica that reliably will overwinter in the Midwest. It is important to not plant too early. When planted prior to early to mid October, it is likely to bolt and ends up losing its winter hardiness. When planted late in the fall, it stays in a rosette stage and maintains it’s winter hardiness.

Winter camelina is a great companion to cereal rye, as it is one of few species that can be planted late in the season. It is a great way to have a multi-species mix that is planted after 10/15!
