WGF Sorghum is a great option to attract game birds. It typically reaches heights of 3 to 4 feet, and has a big head that easily sheds its shattered seeds. Many producers utilize WGF Sorghum in conjunction with wheat or sunflowers.
WGF Sorghum is a quick growing plant that can be planted once the soil temps have reached at least 55° F. All sorghums will die with the first frost, as they have no winter tolerance.
Site Prep & Planting: To establish the best root system possible, WGF Sorghum needs planted 1" deep. Having true 15", 20" or 30" rows helps create channels and is best. For best results, it needs to be at least 10 rows wide. Broadcasting is not suggested.
Maintenance: WGF Sorghum requires 60 pounds of actual nitrogen (equates to about 4 bags of a 32-0-8 fertilizer per acre) to help it stand. Without adequate nitrogen this mix will not achieve its full head density and will potentially lodge. It will winterkill. It should not be planted in the same area more than 2 consecutive years. Rotate away to other non-grass crops before re-utilizing.
