Egyptian Wheat is a very tall summer annual grass that is a part of the sorghum family. It is commonly used for screening to provide hidden areas for wildlife. With proper planting and fertilizer, it can reach heights of 8 to 10 feet.
We encourage habitat manager to consider utilizing our Buck’N Cover instead of straight Egyptian Wheat. By using the mix that has multiple species, you gain a denser lower canopy to truly help animals feel protected, as well as it typically stands better later into winter.
Site Prep & Planting: To establish the best root system possible, Egyptian Wheat needs planted 1" deep. Having true 15", 20" or 30" rows helps create channels and is best. For best results, it needs to be at least 10 rows wide. Broadcasting is not suggested.
Maintenance: Egyptian Wheat requires 100 pounds of actual nitrogen (equates to about 5 bags of a 32-0-8 fertilizer) to help it stand. Without adequate nitrogen this mix will not achieve its full potential height and is more likely to collapse early. It will winterkill. It should not be planted in the same area more than 2 consecutive years. Rotate away to other non-grass crops before re-utilizing.
