Dwarf Essex Rape is known for its leafy foliage that is easy to establish. It produces a tap root, but it is rarely consumed. The draw of the DER is the foliage that is more cold hardy than turnips or many other brassicas. It is great in a mix with grains or other brassicas. Due to the small seed size, DER should be planted no deeper than 1/2". It can be broadcast, but does best if lightly incorporated. Seeding too early may result in drought stressed plants that are unpalatable. Dwarf Essex Rape will winter kill at around 20 degrees.
Seed 2 to 3 pounds in mix or 8 pounds for full rate in July or Aug, no deeper that 1/2".
