Cereal Rye is the most winter hardy grain. It offers lush foliage throughout the fall and into the late spring. Depth: 1" - 2" Seeding rate: 56 to 100 pounds. Will require 30 to 50 pounds of nitrogen to get maximum growth unless following soybeans.
Spring Management:
Option A: terminate with herbicide in April or May. This allows you to have a cleaner seed bed for seeding into in July, and less residue to manage. May need sprayed again before seeding to control weeds.
Option B: Allow to grow and mature in July. There will be some seed that sprouts and grows. Can then be sprayed or tilled to reseed that fall with a different species.
We recommend using cereal rye no more than two years in a row, as it requires a lot of fertilizer.
