Looking for an alfalfa that can work on the roughest of soils where other alfalfa doesn’t grow well? 421BR alfalfa is a workhorse variety that can perform well in many conditions! It’s branch root architecture allows it to thrive in soils and conditions that most alfalfas cannot tolerate. It has proven itself many times on both heavy clay ground and light sands, as well as anywhere in between!

421BR has excellent agronomics and yield potential and great quality. It can handle most situations that habitat managers want to throw at it, and is very palatable and appealing to wildlife!

What it does: By having both a branching and tap root system, this alfalfa is more able to take advantage of moisture in environments that would other wise be moisture limited. It is also less prone to heaving on clay than other varieties, so it often persists longer!

Site Prep & Planting: As a reminder, alfalfa seed cannot be interseeded into a field with existing alfalfa plants. Alfalfa is autotoxic, and established plants will block new seedlings from growing. Rotate fields to other crops for at least 12 months between alfalfa stands! Alfalfa does best when drilled 1/2" deep. It is not suited for frost seeding, but can be broadcast in March - early April with moderate success. Alfalfa is well suited to fall plantings. Seed 25- 30 pounds per acre for a pure stand or 15 pounds in a mixture with clover and grass.

Maintenance: Best mowed 2-3 times per year to manage weeds. Use a low nitrogen fertilizer like 9-23-30.

This seed contains a fungicide seed treatment. See bag tag for details.
